President Trump says Strait of Hormuz could reopen soon amid ongoing conflict

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States expects the Strait of Hormuz to reopen “fairly soon,” though he cautioned that achieving this would not be easy. He did not provide details on how or when this might happen.

Trump also indicated that other countries may assist in securing the vital shipping route but did not name them. “Other countries use the strait, and they are stepping forward to help,” he said.

The waterway has been blocked by Iran since the outbreak of war, causing what analysts describe as one of the most severe disruptions to global energy supplies. The strait is a key passage for roughly 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Trump has expressed frustration with NATO allies for not doing more to secure the route. According to reports, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte told European governments that Trump is seeking firm commitments within days to help protect the strait.

The conflict escalated after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. Iran responded with attacks on Israeli targets and US bases in Gulf countries. The ongoing fighting, including strikes on Lebanon, has resulted in thousands of deaths and widespread displacement.

The war has driven up oil prices and unsettled global markets. Although Trump announced a fragile ceasefire with Tehran earlier this week, tensions remain high, and shipping through the strait is still largely halted.
