MAKKAH: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye on Friday signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, marking a significant step toward strengthening collective security, defence cooperation and regional stability.
The landmark agreement was signed during the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Attack on One Will Be Considered an Attack on All
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement declares that any armed attack against one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all three, reinforcing their commitment to collective defence and strategic deterrence.
The agreement is designed to strengthen joint security measures, enhance military coordination, expand defence cooperation, and improve preparedness against external threats.
Commitment to Regional Peace and Stability
The Foreign Office stated that the agreement reflects the shared determination of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye to promote peace, security and stability across the Middle East and the wider region.
A joint communiqué issued after the summit said the pact is rooted in the longstanding historical relationship, strategic partnership, Islamic solidarity and brotherly ties shared by the three nations.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defence collaboration while pursuing regional peace through coordinated diplomatic and security efforts.
Shehbaz Sharif Holds Talks with Saudi Crown Prince
Before the summit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived at Qasr Al-Safa in Makkah, where he was received by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The two leaders held bilateral talks focusing on Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations, economic cooperation, regional peace, investment opportunities and issues of mutual interest.
The meeting was attended by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif.
High-Level Pakistani Delegation Visits Saudi Arabia
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Saudi Arabia on Thursday leading a high-level delegation at the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He was welcomed upon arrival by the Deputy Governor of Makkah.
Earlier, the Foreign Office described the visit as an important diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, promoting regional peace and enhancing strategic cooperation.
Pakistan Continues Middle East Peace Efforts
The Foreign Office reiterated that Pakistan remains actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East and supports peaceful dialogue to resolve regional conflicts.
Pakistan also expressed hope that progress toward a consensus and reconciliation framework regarding the Strait of Hormuz would help facilitate future negotiations between Iran and the United States.
