Qatar Emerges as Key Bridge between Washington and Tehran

Doha says messages are being exchanged between Washington and Tehran; backs Saudi security measures and Mecca Pact

DOHA: Mediation efforts between the United States and Iran are continuing without interruption, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday, as Doha seeks to help Washington and Tehran find negotiable solutions to their outstanding differences.

Director of the Media and Communication Department at Qatar’s Foreign Ministry Ibrahim bin Sultan Al Hashmi said the mediation efforts were aimed at achieving tangible progress that could serve as a foundation for addressing all issues of concern to both sides.

Speaking during the Foreign Ministry’s weekly media briefing, Al Hashmi said talks were ongoing and that messages were being exchanged between Washington and Tehran, with Qatar continuing to act as a mediator.

He stressed that resolving the dispute would require sustained efforts to identify solutions acceptable to both parties while taking into consideration the concerns and interests of all sides.

“Efforts are ongoing and uninterrupted,” Al Hashmi said, emphasizing Qatar’s continued commitment to facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran.

On the issue concerning Iranian pilots, Al Hashmi said Qatar had made its position clear from the beginning and that the matter had already been addressed. He added that the Iranian side had been informed of the latest developments.

Qatar, he said, remained open to receiving an Iranian delegation to discuss the measures taken in connection with the issue.

Turning to wider regional developments, Al Hashmi said Qatar supported initiatives undertaken by regional countries to protect their security, sovereignty and territorial integrity, including the Mecca Pact.

He said such regional arrangements could strengthen cooperation among countries and contribute to protecting their capabilities and promoting stability across the region.

Al Hashmi also reiterated Qatar’s full support for Saudi Arabia in any measures it may take to safeguard its security and territorial integrity.

He condemned what he described as the irresponsible approach of the Houthi group in targeting Saudi Arabia, Islamic holy sites and civilian infrastructure.

Qatar, he said, stood with the Kingdom in measures aimed at maintaining its security and protecting its territorial integrity.

Addressing speculation about Qatar potentially joining the Mecca Pact, Al Hashmi said Doha supported any initiative that contributed to preserving regional security and stability.

However, he stressed that it was too early to discuss Qatar joining the alliance, indicating that Doha’s current position was focused on supporting regional efforts to strengthen security and stability.

The comments come as diplomatic efforts continue across the region to prevent further escalation and keep channels of communication open between Washington and Tehran.
