UN demands accountability for violations of rules of war in Middleast
United Nations agency leaders on Saturday called for accountability over widespread violations of international law in the Middle East, as casualties continue to rise six weeks after the conflict began following US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
In a joint statement, heads of several UN agencies expressed deep concern about ongoing breaches of the laws of war and international humanitarian standards across the region.
“Even in times of war, rules must be followed,” the statement emphasized, issued by the UN Inter-Agency Standing Committee.
The statement—led by UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher and joined by leaders from agencies covering human rights, health, food security, refugees, and children—highlighted the growing human toll since the conflict erupted on February 28.
