Russia voices support for Cuba after Trump provocative remarks
MOSCOW: Russia on Tuesday reaffirmed its steadfast support for Cuba, following controversial remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting he could take action against the Communist-run island nation.
While not mentioning President Trump directly, the Russian Foreign Ministry voiced strong concern over what it described as an “escalation of tension” surrounding the “Island of Liberty.” The ministry emphasized that Moscow continues to maintain “unwavering solidarity with the government and fraternal people of Cuba.”
The statement comes after President Trump reportedly claimed he expected to have the honor of “taking Cuba” and asserted that “I can do anything I want” with the country. These comments have sparked international concern over the possibility of increased friction between the United States and Cuba, and now Russia has positioned itself as a vocal ally of Havana.
Analysts note that Russia’s statement underscores its ongoing strategic partnership with Cuba, which has historical roots dating back to the Cold War. The remarks also signal Moscow’s intent to counter perceived U.S. aggression in the region and reaffirm its influence in the Western Hemisphere.
The Cuban government has not immediately responded to Russia’s declaration of support, and the White House has yet to comment on Moscow’s reaction. Observers are closely monitoring the situation, as tensions between Washington and Havana could have implications for regional security and international diplomacy.
