Pakistan Reaffirms Human Rights Commitment on 77th UDHR Anniversary
ISLMABAD: Pakistan joined the international community on Monday in commemorating the 77th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), reiterating its commitment to uphold human dignity, fundamental freedoms, and equal rights for all.
In a statement issued by the Foreign Office, Pakistan highlighted a series of institutional, legislative, and policy measures taken in recent years to strengthen the protection of human rights, particularly for women, children, and religious minorities. A key milestone mentioned was the enactment of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 2025, which aims to improve mechanisms for addressing grievances and protecting minority rights across the country.
The government also noted Pakistan’s recent election to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) for the sixth time, calling it a clear reflection of the international community’s confidence in Pakistan’s role in advancing global human rights standards. Officials reaffirmed Pakistan’s intention to continue engaging constructively with all HRC members and to prioritize economic, social, cultural, and developmental rights alongside political freedoms.
The statement also drew attention to ongoing human rights concerns in regions under foreign occupation, particularly the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJ&K) and the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). Pakistan reiterated its stance that millions living under occupation face daily violations of basic rights and continue to struggle for their inalienable right to self-determination.
Raising alarm over the rising wave of Islamophobia worldwide, Pakistan called for coordinated global action to counter hate speech, discrimination, and violence targeting Muslim communities.
Pakistan concluded by reaffirming its long-standing commitment to promoting and protecting human rights for all, and expressed hope for stronger international collaboration to address both current challenges and emerging threats to global human rights.
