Actress Hayden Panettiere Dies at 36
LOS ANGELES: US actress Hayden Panettiere, who rose to international fame for her role as Claire Bennet in the hit television series Heroes and later earned two Golden Globe nominations for Nashville, has died at the age of 36.
Panettiere’s family confirmed her death through a statement issued by her publicist. Her father also confirmed the news to ABC News. No cause of death has been disclosed, while authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” her father said, describing her as an “incredible light” who brought love and joy to her family, friends and millions of fans.
He also requested privacy for the family as they cope with the loss.
Born in Palisades, New York, in 1989, Panettiere began her career in television commercials before turning one. She later became a successful child actress, appearing in popular soap operas including One Life to Live and Guiding Light.
Her early film credits included Pixar’s animated classic A Bug’s Life, in which she voiced Dot, and the 2000 sports drama Remember the Titans, where she appeared alongside Denzel Washington.
Panettiere achieved her major breakthrough in 2006 when she was cast as cheerleader Claire Bennet in NBC’s science-fiction drama Heroes. Her character, who possessed regenerative abilities, quickly became one of the show’s most recognizable figures and helped make Panettiere an international star.
She went on to achieve further success with the musical drama series Nashville, playing ambitious country singer Juliette Barnes opposite Connie Britton. The role earned her two Golden Globe nominations and established her as a versatile television performer.
Her film career also included appearances in Ice Princess, I Love You, Beth Cooper and Scream 4. She later returned as Kirby Reed in the 2023 horror sequel Scream VI.
Beyond acting, Panettiere was open about personal challenges, including addiction and postpartum depression. Earlier this year, she published her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, reflecting on her career, family life and struggles away from the spotlight.
Panettiere had been in a relationship with Ukrainian former world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko beginning in 2009. The couple became engaged in 2013 and welcomed their daughter, Kaya, in 2014 before separating in 2018.
She is survived by her daughter, Kaya, and her parents. Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28.
Panettiere’s death marks the loss of an actress who began her career as a child and went on to become a familiar face to television and film audiences around the world.
