Jasmine Paolini Battles Past Alexandra Eala to Reach First Grand Slam Quarter-final in Two Years at Wimbledon
Italy’s Jasmine Paolini produced a determined performance to secure a place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time since her memorable run to the final in 2024. The 13th seed defeated rising Filipina sensation Alexandra Eala in a hard-fought three-set contest on Centre Court, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Monday.
The victory marks Paolini‘s first appearance in a Grand Slam quarter-final in two years and continues her impressive resurgence at the All England Club after a difficult start to the 2025 season.
Paolini Ends Eala’s Dream Wimbledon Run
Alexandra Eala arrived in the fourth round full of confidence after stunning former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek earlier in the tournament. The 21-year-old had already created history by becoming the first Filipina woman to reach both the third and fourth rounds of a Grand Slam tournament.
Despite another spirited performance, Eala was unable to overcome the experience and composure of Paolini, who held her nerve during the crucial moments of the match.
Following her victory, Paolini expressed both her excitement and relief at reaching the last eight.
“I feel so lucky to have this opportunity and so lucky to get the win,” Paolini said after the match.
The Italian also acknowledged tennis legend Roger Federer, who was watching from the Royal Box on Centre Court.
“I just needed to stay focused and not think about him being here. It’s an amazing feeling to be here right now with the win.”
A Tough Opening Set
The opening set was closely contested, with both players producing high-quality tennis. Paolini eventually gained the decisive break of serve to edge ahead 6-4.
She had earlier missed an opportunity to serve out the set but quickly recovered, breaking Eala’s serve once again to take the early advantage.
Eala Responds Brilliantly
The second set showcased Eala’s fighting spirit. After both players exchanged early service breaks, the Filipina seized control by breaking Paolini for a 4-3 lead.
One of the most important moments came in the following game when Eala found herself trailing 0-40 on serve. Showing remarkable composure, she saved all three break points and held serve to strengthen her advantage.
The left-handed youngster maintained her momentum and eventually closed out the set 6-4, forcing the match into a deciding third set and raising hopes of another major upset.
Paolini Holds Her Nerve
With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, both players showed signs of tension in the final set. The contest remained evenly balanced until the eighth game, when Paolini produced the crucial break of serve that ultimately decided the match.
Although she fell behind 0-30 while serving for the match, the experienced Italian stayed calm under pressure, winning four consecutive points to complete a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory after an intense battle.
Return to Form
Paolini’s run at Wimbledon comes after a challenging season in which she struggled to reproduce the form that took her to two Grand Slam finals in 2024. However, she believes her confidence has steadily returned throughout the tournament.
Reflecting on her progress, she said;
“After the first set in the first round I was like, ‘Okay, it can only go better.’ Point by point, game by game, I was feeling better.”
Interestingly, Paolini began her Wimbledon campaign by losing the opening set of her first-round match 6-0, but she has improved with every round since then.
Quarter-final Challenge Awaits
Paolini will now face Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the Wimbledon quarter-finals. It will be her first Grand Slam quarter-final since finishing runner-up at Wimbledon in 2024, where she narrowly lost an exciting three-set final to Barbora Krejcikova.
Last season, Paolini also reached the French Open final before losing to Iga Swiatek, highlighting her ability to compete on the biggest stages.
With her confidence growing and momentum building, the Italian will now aim to continue her impressive Wimbledon campaign and move one step closer to another Grand Slam final.
