Medical team completes examination of Ex PM Imran Khan at Adiala jail

Jail Superintend says medical team’s report expects to be compiled soon

RAWALPINDI: Five-member team of specialist doctors conducted a detailed medical examination of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail on Sunday, amid growing political tensions over his health.

According to a statement issued by Jail Superintendent Sajid Baig, the medical team—comprising specialists from various hospitals—arrived at the prison equipped with necessary medical instruments, medicines and supplies to carry out an eye examination. The check-up was conducted under the supervision of a two-member medical board with strict security arrangements in place.

Despite an invitation extended by the government to PTI leadership to witness the medical examination, no party representative arrived at the jail. Officials stated that the team had been waiting inside the prison since 2:30 pm before proceeding with the examination in the absence of PTI leaders.

Medical Records Sent to Punjab Home Department

Jail authorities forwarded Imran Khan’s complete prison medical record to the Punjab Home Department. The documentation includes detailed charts of his vital signs—blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and blood sugar levels—along with consultation reports and specifics of medical staff overseeing his care.

Officials said on-duty doctors examine the former premier three times daily, and records of his medical assessments are compiled regularly. A separate report detailing his eye condition has also been submitted.

Govt Announces Hospital Transfer on “Humanitarian Grounds”

A day earlier, the federal government announced plans to shift the incarcerated PTI founder from Adiala Jail to a hospital and constitute a medical board to monitor his condition.

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry stated that the decision was taken in view of Imran’s illness and in line with humanitarian and legal obligations. He emphasized that providing medical facilities to prisoners is the government’s responsibility and urged PTI to avoid politicising health-related matters.

Separately, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced via social media platform X that Imran’s eye treatment would be carried out at a specialised medical institution by ophthalmology experts. He added that a comprehensive medical report would also be submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Supreme Court Intervention

The Supreme Court had earlier directed authorities to provide Imran access to an eye specialist and allow him to speak with his sons in the United Kingdom. The order came after a report submitted by his lawyer, Salman Safdar, who was appointed amicus curiae by the court.

According to the report, Imran has reportedly lost 85% of vision in his right eye. Safdar expressed concerns over the adequacy of medical facilities provided in jail and recommended immediate specialist consultation.

On Saturday, jail authorities facilitated a phone call between Imran and his sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, in compliance with court directives.

Opposition Sit-In Continues

Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers continued their sit-in at Parliament House for a second consecutive day, demanding that Imran be transferred to a hospital for treatment under the supervision of his personal physician or family members.

Heavy police deployment was witnessed around Parliament House and K-P House, with several routes sealed amid the protest.

Speaking to media outside K-P House, former K-P chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur said the party would continue its sit-in until proper medical treatment is ensured.

K-P Chief Minister Sohail Afridi stated that if Imran is treated under the supervision of his personal doctors and family, the protest would be called off; otherwise, the party leadership would decide its next course of action.

The situation remains politically sensitive as the government reiterates its commitment to provide medical care in accordance with the law, while the opposition maintains pressure for further assurances regarding the former prime minister’s treatment.
