Iran Denies Trump Claim of Backchannel Talks with IRGC
TEHRAN: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that Washington is engaged in backchannel negotiations with senior IRGC officials, saying no such talks are taking place.
IRGC spokesperson Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi told Iranian media on Monday that there was “no dialogue” between IRGC officials and American representatives.
Mohebbi dismissed Trump’s claim as a product of what he described as “fantasies” stemming from the US president’s alleged frustration and failure in the conflict with Iran.
He said the IRGC represents “the arm and voice of the power of the Iranian nation and the Islamic Republic,” adding that the force makes its position clear through its actions on the battlefield.
According to Mohebbi, diplomatic matters are handled by other institutions of the Islamic Republic. He said information available to the IRGC, along with statements from Iranian Foreign Ministry officials, indicated that there were currently no negotiations with Washington, including through diplomatic channels.
The IRGC spokesperson attributed the absence of diplomatic talks to what he called Washington’s broken promises and repeated violations of previous agreements.
Mohebbi also accused Trump of using statements about negotiations to temporarily influence global oil and energy prices.
“Trump’s mental fantasies will not help him on the field,” Mohebbi said, insisting that the United States should accept what he described as its failure and comply with Iran’s conditions.
He further warned that the sooner Washington recognizes its failure and adjusts its decisions accordingly, the more it could avoid what he described as greater and heavier losses for the United States.
