Iran, Oman reaches broad understanding on Strait of Hormuz framework
Iran and Oman have reached a broad understanding on a general framework governing the strategic Strait of Hormuz, though the proposed arrangement still requires approval from Iran’s senior leadership before it can be finalised, according to Iran’s state news agency ISNA.
Speaking during a televised interview, Hassan Ghashghavi, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said negotiations between Tehran and Muscat were in their final stages and significant progress had been made.
“A general framework for the Iran-Oman negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz has been largely agreed upon,” Ghashghavi said, adding that the proposal now awaits endorsement by the country’s higher authorities before it can move forward.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints, serves as a key route for global oil and gas shipments. Any agreement concerning its governance is likely to attract close international attention due to its potential impact on regional security and global energy markets.
