Iran warns US against any move on Kharg Island, says Hormuz decisions will be made through regional consultations
TEHRAN: Iran warned the United States on Monday against any attempt to seize the strategic Kharg Island, saying such a move would trigger a strong response, while reaffirming that any decisions regarding the future of the Strait of Hormuz would be taken through consultations with regional countries.
Speaking at a weekly news briefing in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said any US ground operation against Iran would face severe consequences. He added that there were people inside Iran prepared to respond immediately to any military incursion by American forces.
Baghaei also stressed that discussions on the future management of the Strait of Hormuz would continue in coordination with Oman and other Gulf countries, saying Tehran believes regional issues should be resolved through dialogue among countries in the region.
He said Iran has consistently maintained that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important waterways, should remain under arrangements agreed upon by regional states, given its critical role in global energy supplies and international trade.
Responding to concerns surrounding the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States, Baghaei dismissed speculation as unfounded. He said the document consists of 14 clauses and contains no ambiguity or hidden provisions.
“Iran remains committed to protecting its national sovereignty and regional security while conducting its affairs in accordance with international law,” he said, adding that Tehran would continue close consultations with neighboring countries on issues affecting regional stability.
