Saudi Arabia’s Dammam Industrial Complex Hit in Reported Yemeni Attack

Reported Yemeni attack sparks massive blaze at industrial facility in eastern Saudi Arabia amid escalating Houthi-Saudi hostilities and renewed cross-border strikes.

Dammam: A reported Yemeni strike on an industrial complex in Saudi Arabia’s eastern city of Dammam triggered a massive fire on Sunday, according to Iran’s state-run IRNA News Agency, amid a sharp escalation in hostilities between the Iran-backed Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia.

“A Yemeni strike hit an industrial complex in Dammam, eastern Saudi Arabia, sparking a large fire at the facility,” IRNA reported in a post on social media platform X.

The reported attack marks a further escalation in cross-border hostilities between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, which backs Yemen’s internationally recognised government. The two sides have intensified their attacks following the collapse of a fragile ceasefire, raising fresh concerns about regional security, energy infrastructure and maritime trade.

The latest developments follow Houthi allegations that Saudi airstrikes on residential areas in western Yemen killed 12 people and critically injured three others on Thursday. The group’s health ministry said the casualties occurred when homes belonging to two families were targeted in Al-Barah, in the Maqbana district.

The allegations have not been independently verified. The Houthis had also reported at least 14 fatalities in Saudi strikes targeting a petrol station and a market on Wednesday. Separately, the group claimed responsibility for targeting Aden airport, a key stronghold of Yemen’s internationally recognised government, with the attack reportedly leaving several civilians wounded.

The renewed escalation follows the breakdown of a truce in July after the Houthis allowed an Iranian aircraft to land in Sanaa, despite Saudi restrictions on Yemeni airspace. The development triggered a fresh wave of hostilities, with the Houthi movement subsequently intensifying attacks against Saudi territory, commercial shipping and oil infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia has faced mounting security challenges as the Houthis have expanded their attacks on strategic targets, including facilities linked to the kingdom’s aviation and energy sectors. Previous reported attacks on Riyadh airport disrupted operations for two weeks and forced the cancellation of major events, adding pressure on Saudi Arabia’s ambitious economic diversification programme.

The growing confrontation also threatens regional stability and international shipping routes, particularly given Yemen’s strategic location near the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since 2014, when Houthi fighters seized the capital, Sanaa, prompting a Saudi-led military coalition to intervene the following year in support of the internationally recognised government.

The prolonged conflict has devastated the country’s economy, displaced millions and created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. According to United Nations figures cited in reports on the renewed fighting, more than 1,600 people have been killed and over 275,000 displaced since hostilities resumed.

The latest reported strike on Dammam underscores the growing risk of the Yemen conflict spilling further into Saudi territory, threatening critical infrastructure and complicating efforts to restore regional stability.
