Iran warns of ‘surprise’ response, vows new military technology against aggression

Iranian Armed Forces spokesman issues fresh warning over any aggression, while asserting Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.

TEHRAN: Iran has warned that any new aggression against the country would trigger a response using advanced military technologies, with a senior Armed Forces spokesman saying Tehran has “a surprise in store” for its adversaries.

Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said Iran’s military had significantly strengthened its capabilities and developed new technologies, including more advanced missiles and drones.

Speaking on Saturday night on National Media, Shekarchi said Iran’s defence doctrine had shifted after the 1979 Islamic Revolution from conventional warfare toward asymmetric warfare, which he described as a strategy designed to counter an enemy’s costly heavy weapons with simpler but more effective systems.

He cited Iran’s development of missile capabilities during the 1980s war with Iraq as an example of how the country had sought to develop indigenous military technology under pressure.

Shekarchi said Iran’s asymmetric warfare strategy was built around “self-sacrifice, faith and spirituality”, while stressing the importance of secrecy and information security in maintaining an element of surprise.

He claimed adversaries had miscalculated Iran’s resilience and defensive capabilities, saying Iran was now considerably stronger than it had been during previous conflicts.

“The powerful Iranian Armed Forces are many times stronger than they were at the outset of the second and third imposed wars,” Shekarchi said, adding that the military was currently in a “very good condition.”

The Iranian commander also highlighted the development of the country’s missile and drone programmes, warning that Tehran would employ newer technologies if confronted with another attack.

“This time we have a surprise in store for the enemy,” he said.

Shekarchi also issued a warning over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, saying Iran retained control over the management of the waterway.

“Any ship that wants to pass outside the Iranian route will not have security,” he said.

The comments come amid heightened regional tensions and repeated warnings from Iranian officials that Tehran would respond to any military action against its territory.
