Switzerland reach FIFA World Cup last 16 with comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria

Switzerland booked their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup after producing a disciplined and impressive 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday. The Swiss side controlled much of the match from start to finish, combining solid defending with clinical finishing to secure a deserved win.

With the result, Switzerland advance to the knockout stage, where they will face the winner of Friday’s match between Colombia and Ghana. The Swiss will now be aiming to continue their strong tournament campaign and reach the quarter-finals.

The breakthrough came in the first half thanks to an outstanding individual effort from Johan Manzambi. The lively winger showcased his pace and skill by making a powerful run down the left flank, beating his marker before delivering a perfectly timed cross into the penalty area. Breel Embolo was in the right place at the right time, calmly tapping the ball into the net from close range to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead.

Switzerland wasted no time extending their advantage after the half-time break. Less than a minute into the second half, Algeria defender Rafik Belghali failed to properly clear the ball, sending a weak clearance into a dangerous area. Dan Ndoye reacted quickly, controlled the loose ball with confidence, and fired a low shot through a crowded penalty area. Although Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane managed to get a hand on the effort, he could not produce a strong enough save, and the ball found its way into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

The second goal effectively ended Algeria’s hopes of mounting a comeback. Despite their efforts to respond, the North African side struggled to create clear scoring opportunities against Switzerland’s well-organized defense. It was a frustrating and disappointing performance for Algeria, who were unable to match the intensity and quality shown by their opponents.

The defeat means Algeria are eliminated from the tournament at the Round of 32 stage. They join Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, and South Africa as African nations that have been knocked out of the competition at this stage. Morocco remain the only African team to have successfully progressed to the Round of 16.

Switzerland will now shift their focus to the knockout rounds, where they await the outcome of the Colombia versus Ghana fixture to learn the identity of their next opponents.
