Field Marshal Munir, Interior Minister land in Tehran for going Mideast negotiations
TEHRAN: Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday as part of ongoing Middle East peace efforts, according to an official statement.
Pakistan’s military media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) , said the field marshal was accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The delegation was received by Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Araghchi welcomed the delegation, expressing appreciation for Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue. He noted that Islamabad’s efforts reflect the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries and reaffirmed a shared commitment to regional peace and stability.
According to a senior Iranian source cited by Reuters, Munir’s visit aims to help “narrow gaps” between Iran and the United States amid ongoing tensions.
The Pakistani delegation later held detailed discussions with Araghchi and other Iranian officials. Iranian authorities confirmed that indirect communication with Washington is continuing through Pakistani mediation.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said multiple messages have been exchanged since Sunday, when Iran’s delegation returned to Tehran. He added that both sides have conveyed and received their respective positions.
On the nuclear issue, Baghaei stated that uranium enrichment remains a longstanding topic of discussion. While acknowledging room for negotiation on its scale and type, he emphasized that Iran must retain the ability to continue enrichment based on its national requirements.
Over the weekend, rare direct talks between the United States and Iran were held in Pakistan, aimed at resolving longstanding disputes. However, the discussions concluded early Sunday without reaching an agreement.
