Pakistani Envoy Meets UN Chief amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions
UNITED NATIONS: As tensions continue to escalate between India and Pakistan, Pakistani Ambassador to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday to discuss the latest regional developments.
According to a press release issued by the Pakistan Mission to the UN, the meeting focused on the evolving security situation in South Asia and emphasized the urgent need for de-escalation. The ambassador reportedly reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining regional peace and stability.
Earlier in the day, during a regular UN press briefing, spokesperson Stephane Dujarric addressed questions regarding a possible visit by the UN chief to India and Pakistan. Dujarric stated that Guterres had offered his good offices during phone conversations with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, following a recent armed attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
“So I don’t think there would be any travel until there’s a clear message that… both sides have accepted his good offices,” Dujarric added.
When asked whether Guterres would intervene given India’s alleged threats to emulate Israel’s tactics in Gaza for Kashmir, Dujarric reaffirmed the Secretary-General’s engagement. “He spoke to the Minister of External Affairs of India. He spoke to the Prime Minister of Pakistan… and he offered his good offices,” he said.
