UN Security Council Adopts Pakistan-Initiated Statement on Diplomacy during Active Hostilities
Move underscores Pakistan’s diplomatic role in promoting dialogue, ceasefires and peaceful political settlements amid armed conflicts
UNITED NATIONS: (News Pulse) The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously adopted a Pakistan-initiated Presidential Statement (PRST) on the role of diplomacy during active hostilities, reaffirming the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement even after conflicts have erupted.
According to Foreign Office that the adoption by consensus marks an important contribution by Pakistan to the Security Council’s thematic agenda on international peace and security, highlighting the need to keep diplomatic channels open and pursue dialogue, mediation and peaceful solutions throughout the course of armed conflicts.
The Presidential Statement emphasizes that diplomacy must not come to a halt once hostilities begin. Instead, sustained diplomatic engagement, including mediation, good offices and continued communication between conflicting parties, remains essential to facilitating ceasefires, preventing further escalation and achieving durable political settlements.
The initiative builds upon Security Council Resolution 2788 (2025), which was unanimously adopted during Pakistan’s presidency of the Council in July 2025. While the earlier resolution addressed the broader importance of diplomacy in conflict prevention and resolution, the newly adopted statement places particular emphasis on maintaining diplomatic efforts during active hostilities.
The statement brings together established principles and experiences from different conflict situations within a focused thematic framework, providing the Security Council with a collective political reference point for advancing de-escalation, facilitating dialogue and supporting peaceful and sustainable political solutions.
Its adoption also reinforces the principle that diplomatic engagement should continue at every stage of the conflict cycle, rather than being confined to efforts made before the outbreak of hostilities or after a ceasefire has been reached.
The development reflects Pakistan’s continued commitment to multilateralism, dialogue and diplomacy, as well as its efforts to contribute constructively to the United Nations’ mandate of maintaining international peace and security.
Through the initiative, Pakistan has highlighted the enduring relevance of diplomacy as an essential instrument for addressing conflicts, reducing tensions and creating pathways towards lasting peace.
