Belgium Crush USA 4-1 to Reach FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals as Folarin Balogun Fails to Make Impact

Belgium Crush USA 4-1 to Reach FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals as Folarin Balogun Fails to Make Impact

Belgium advanced to the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals with a commanding 4-1 victory over the United States, overcoming the controversy surrounding USA striker Folarin Balogun’s reinstatement by FIFA. Despite having his one-match suspension lifted before kickoff, Balogun was unable to inspire the Americans as the Red Devils produced a dominant performance to book their place in the last eight.

The Round of 16 clash was one of the tournament’s most anticipated matches, not only because of the high stakes but also due to the controversy surrounding Balogun’s eligibility. The United States received a major boost after FIFA’s disciplinary committee overturned the Arsenal forward’s automatic one-game suspension, allowing him to feature against Belgium.

Balogun had been sent off during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after being shown a straight red card by Brazilian referee Raphael Claus for stepping on an opponent’s ankle. The dismissal carried an automatic one-match suspension, but FIFA later suspended the ban for one year, making the striker available for the knockout match.

The decision quickly became one of the biggest talking points of the FIFA World Cup, with fans and football experts questioning the timing of the ruling. Reports also claimed that former U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with FIFA President Gianni Infantino before the disciplinary committee announced its decision, further fueling debate across the football world.

Charles De Ketelaere Fires Belgium Into Control

Belgium wasted little time asserting its dominance. Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring in the ninth minute after capitalizing on poor defensive organization from the United States.

The Belgian midfielder doubled his tally in the 33rd minute, once again punishing defensive mistakes to give the Red Devils a comfortable two-goal advantage before halftime. Belgium controlled possession throughout the opening period, while the Americans struggled to cope with the pace and movement of their opponents.

Matt Freese Error Hands Belgium Third Goal

Any hopes of an American comeback disappeared early in the second half when goalkeeper Matt Freese made a costly mistake that gifted Belgium a third goal.

The error proved decisive, allowing Belgium to extend its lead and maintain complete control of the match. The United States found it increasingly difficult to break through Belgium’s disciplined defense as the Red Devils continued to create dangerous attacking opportunities.

Folarin Balogun Unable to Change the Game

Although Balogun’s availability generated significant excitement before the match, the USA striker was unable to deliver when it mattered most.

His main contribution came when he won a free kick near Belgium’s penalty area after being fouled by defender Brandon Mechele. The resulting attack eventually led to Malik Tillman scoring the United States’ only goal of the match.

The Americans repeatedly attempted to use Balogun’s pace behind Belgium’s defense, but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced another outstanding display. Balogun’s best opportunity came in the 82nd minute when his left-footed effort was denied by Courtois.

Unable to score or significantly influence the contest, Balogun was substituted for Haji Wright during stoppage time.

Romelu Lukaku Seals Comfortable Belgium Victory

Belgium completed its dominant performance in the third minute of stoppage time when substitute Romelu Lukaku added a fourth goal to put the result beyond doubt.

The convincing victory extended Belgium’s unbeaten run to 18 matches and moved the Red Devils one step closer to winning their first FIFA World Cup title.

Belgium to Face Spain in World Cup Quarterfinal

With the victory, Belgium progressed to the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, where it will face Spain in a blockbuster showdown for a place in the semifinals. The winner of that match will take on either France or Morocco in the final four.

For the United States, the defeat marked another disappointing Round of 16 exit against Belgium, the second time in the last 12 years that the Red Devils have eliminated the Americans from the FIFA World Cup.
