Iranian cyber attacks on Israel triple amid ongoing regional tensions
Jerusalem: Israel has reported a dramatic rise in cyber attacks allegedly linked to Iran, highlighting the growing role of digital warfare alongside military conflict. According to a senior Israeli cyber security official, the number of hostile cyber incidents targeting Israel has nearly tripled over the past year, reflecting heightened tensions following the joint US-Israeli military campaign against Iran.
Speaking to the German newspaper Die Welt, Yossi Karadi, Director General of Israel’s National Cyber Directorate, revealed that Israeli authorities recorded approximately 4,800 cyber attack attempts in June 2026, compared to around 1,600 incidents during the same month in 2025, when Israel was conducting military operations against Iran.
Karadi warned that many of the cyber groups involved possess advanced technical capabilities, making them a significant threat despite Israel’s strong cyber defenses.
“Some groups are very skilled. We can handle them, but we have to take them seriously. Unlike in the kinetic realm, there’s no ceasefire in cyberspace,” he said.
Critical Infrastructure Among Main Targets
According to Karadi, the attacks have targeted a broad range of organizations across Israel. These include systems supporting the country’s critical infrastructure, major government and public institutions, private businesses, and even small and medium-sized enterprises.
He noted that industries such as law firms and accounting firms have also been affected, demonstrating that attackers are not focusing solely on high-profile government networks but are attempting to exploit weaker targets across multiple sectors.
Israel Says Key Systems Remain Secure
Despite the sharp increase in cyber threats, Israeli officials maintain that the country’s most vital infrastructure has remained protected.
Karadi said that, so far, Israel’s cybersecurity teams have successfully prevented attacks from disrupting essential national services. However, he emphasized that authorities remain on high alert as cyber threats continue to evolve.
“So far—and hopefully it stays that way—we’ve managed to fend off attacks on critical infrastructure,” he stated.
Smaller Businesses Face Greater Risk
While critical systems have largely remained secure, Karadi acknowledged that smaller companies with weaker cybersecurity defenses have suffered more serious consequences. In several cases, attackers reportedly managed to infiltrate corporate networks and completely erase computer systems, causing significant operational disruption.
He did not identify any of the affected companies but stressed that organizations of all sizes must strengthen their cybersecurity measures to defend against increasingly sophisticated attacks.
Cyber Warfare Continues Beyond the Battlefield
The reported surge in cyberattacks underscores how modern conflicts increasingly extend beyond traditional military operations. Even when armed confrontations slow or cease, cyber warfare continues around the clock, targeting governments, businesses, and public institutions.
Israeli authorities say they are continuing to monitor the evolving threat landscape and are working closely with public and private organizations to improve cyber resilience as regional tensions persist.
