China urges Pakistan, Afghanistan to resolve border tensions through dialogue

BEIJING: China on Tuesday called on Pakistan and Afghanistan to manage their recent tensions through dialogue and consultation, following reports of an exchange of fire between security forces of the two neighboring countries on December 5.

Addressing a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun expressed Beijing’s deep concern over the incident and stressed the importance of maintaining peace along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. He said that both countries are “long-standing friendly neighbors of China,” and geographical reality makes them “neighbors that cannot move away from each other.”

Guo emphasized that Pakistan and Afghanistan should continue to handle disputes through peaceful means and avoid actions that could escalate the situation. “We hope both sides will promote de-escalation and work together to maintain regional peace and stability,” he said.

The spokesperson highlighted China’s continued readiness to support diplomatic efforts aimed at improving relations between Islamabad and Kabul. “China is willing to work with the international community to play a constructive role in enhancing understanding, cooperation, and development between the two countries,” he added.

The recent border clash, which reportedly took place along the Torkham or Chaman frontier area, has once again underscored long-standing tensions over border security and militant movement. While both Pakistan and Afghanistan frequently stress their commitment to peace, incidents of cross-border fire have continued to strain relations.

China, an important regional stakeholder with strong ties to both countries, has been increasingly active in encouraging dialogue, particularly under the framework of regional stability and economic cooperation.
