The territory’s harsh climate, limited infrastructure and extensive ice sheet present substantial obstacles to exploration, transportation and commercial production.

Despite its potential mineral wealth, turning discoveries into commercially viable operations would require significant investment, infrastructure development and years of work.

Trump has repeatedly sought greater US control over Greenland and its natural resources since returning to the White House, triggering tensions with Denmark and other European allies. Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, which retains responsibility for areas including defence and foreign affairs.

The dispute has raised concerns among European governments and NATO partners over sovereignty, security and the future of the strategically important Arctic region.

Last month, the United States, Denmark and Greenland reached an agreement intended to ease tensions following Trump’s threats to annex the island. Trump subsequently described the arrangement as giving Washington “permanent control” over Greenland’s security.

The agreement, however, begins by acknowledging Denmark’s sovereignty and the right of Greenland’s people to self-determination.

It introduces limited changes to a 1951 treaty governing the US military presence in Greenland as part of NATO’s collective defence arrangements. While the agreement refers to cooperation on minerals, economic development and business promotion, it does not explicitly provide for oil and gas exploration on the scale Trump has described.

According to the agreement’s text published on the White House website, the framework also provides a pathway for additional US military bases and guarantees of American military access if Greenland becomes independent from Denmark.

The arrangement therefore focuses primarily on defence and broader economic cooperation, rather than announcing a major new energy exploration programme.

Trump reiterated the strategic importance of Greenland in his Wednesday post, arguing that the island was essential to protecting the United States against emerging military threats.

“Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our Defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived,” he wrote.

Greenland’s location between North America and Europe gives it considerable strategic importance for Arctic surveillance, missile warning systems and military operations, particularly as competition among major powers in the region intensifies.

The island’s potential natural resources have also attracted international attention, but the gap between geological potential and commercially recoverable reserves remains a central challenge for prospective investors.

The latest disagreement highlights the difference between Washington’s ambitions for Greenland and the practical realities facing its resource sector. Although exploration activity involving US companies is taking place, Greenland’s government has cautioned that substantial commercial development remains a distant prospect.

CNN said it had contacted the White House, the Danish prime minister’s office and Greenland’s Mineral Resources Authority for comment.

Trump’s Greenland Resource Ambitions Face Reality Check Greenland says US-linked exploration remains limited, warning that harsh Arctic conditions, high costs and inadequate infrastructure could keep large-scale oil, gas and mineral development years away.
