Two separate attacks leave 27 dead and 26 wounded as armed suspects remain at large

JOHANNESBURG: At least 27 people were killed and 26 others wounded in two separate mass shootings in South Africa overnight, police said on Sunday, as authorities launched manhunts for the gunmen.

In the first attack, 17 people were killed and 15 wounded when armed men opened fire at a bar in Wedela Township, west of Johannesburg, according to then South Africa Police Service (SAPS).

Police said the shooting took place at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. The victims included 13 men and four women, all of whom were declared dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Eight unidentified gunmen were reportedly involved in the attack. Police said the suspects were armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols and allegedly searched some patrons before taking their mobile phones and fleeing in two unidentified vehicles.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, while the motive for the attack remains unknown.

Hours later, another deadly shooting was reported in Lwandle Township in the Western Cape province.

Police said 10 people were killed and 11 others wounded when gunmen opened fire at an entertainment venue at about 1:46 a.m. on Sunday.

Five victims died at the scene, while another five later succumbed to their injuries in hospital, police said.

No arrests have been reported in the Lwandle attack. A multidisciplinary team led by detectives specializing in serious and violent crimes has been assigned to the investigation, while additional police resources have been deployed to the area.

The latest bloodshed comes just days after at least 11 people were killed in a separate shooting at a home in KwaMakhutha township, about 30 km (19 miles) south of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal province.

South Africa has one of the world’s highest rates of violent crime, with roughly 60 people killed each day, according to official crime statistics.

The country has also been investigating a series of killings in Johannesburg in which the bodies of 10 women were found in close proximity to one another. Police have identified similarities between some of the cases but said there was no concrete evidence linking them to the same perpetrator or group.

In March, the government deployed soldiers to crime hotspots to assist police in tackling violent crime. President Cyril Ramaphosa has described rampant criminality as one of the country’s major challenges.
