Trump Wins Expanded US Military Access to Greenland in Strategic Arctic Pact<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Washington gains expanded access to Greenland\u2019s defence areas as Denmark reaffirms sovereignty and the island\u2019s right to self-determination<\/p>\n

NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen have signed a new security agreement that will allow Washington to expand and modernise its military presence on Greenland, deepening US involvement in the strategically important Arctic region.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday and provides for the expansion of the existing US Pituffik Space Base as well as the establishment of new US defence areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.<\/p>\n

Under the agreement, shared by Denmark\u2019s Foreign Ministry, the United States<\/a> will receive broad access to defence areas across Greenland, including territorial waters, by land, air and sea. US aircraft will also be permitted to fly over and land across the island under the agreed arrangements.<\/p>\n

The deal significantly expands the framework for US military operations in Greenland while formally reaffirming the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and recognising Greenland\u2019s right to self-determination.<\/p>\n

Trump had previously described the agreement as providing Washington with permanent control over Greenland\u2019s security. In a post on Truth Social on Friday, he said the arrangement would prevent US adversaries from establishing military bases, maintaining a military presence or making sensitive investments in Greenland without Washington\u2019s approval.<\/p>\n

The agreement, however, falls short of Trump\u2019s earlier calls for the United States to acquire Greenland. Trump had repeatedly argued that US control of the strategically located territory was necessary for American national security.<\/p>\n

Both Copenhagen and Nuuk have welcomed the new security framework.<\/p>\n

Frederiksen said the agreement would strengthen common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, while Nielsen described it as an arrangement that would benefit all sides.<\/p>\n

The deal comes as the Arctic assumes growing strategic importance because of its location between North America, Europe and Russia, as well as increasing competition over security, shipping routes and natural resources.<\/p>\n

Greenland has hosted a significant US military presence since the Cold War. At its peak, the United States operated 17 military facilities on the island and had more than 10,000 troops stationed there.<\/p>\n

Today, the US maintains one major installation, the Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base. Located in northern Greenland, it is the US Department of Defense\u2019s northernmost installation and plays a key role in missile warning, missile defence and space surveillance missions, according to the US Space Force.<\/p>\n

The new agreement is expected to give Washington greater flexibility in operating and developing military infrastructure on the island while preserving Denmark\u2019s formal sovereignty and Greenland\u2019s recognised right to determine its future.<\/p>\n

For the United States, the agreement strengthens its military position in a region that has become increasingly significant to national security and defence planning. For Denmark and Greenland, it establishes a broader security arrangement with Washington without transferring sovereignty over the territory to the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
