Barcelona Records Highest Temperature in 112 Years as Spain Battles Intensifying Heatwave<\/strong><\/h3>\n

BARCELONA, Spain: Barcelona registered its highest temperature in 112 years on Wednesday as an intense heatwave continued to grip Spain, with meteorological authorities warning that scorching conditions linked to extreme weather are expected to persist through Thursday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to regional weather agency Meteocat<\/a>, the Fabra Observatory on the western outskirts of Barcelona recorded a provisional maximum temperature of 40.5 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record of 40 degrees Celsius set on July 30, 2024. The latest reading marks the highest temperature recorded at the observatory since measurements began more than a century ago.<\/p>\n

Spain’s national meteorological agency (AEMET) also reported a historic temperature at Barcelona-El Prat Airport, where the mercury climbed to 37.7 degrees Celsius, the highest level recorded at the airport since records began in 1924.<\/p>\n

AEMET spokesperson Jos\u00e9 \u00c1ngel N\u00fa\u00f1ez confirmed that both monitoring stations are the city’s official reference observatories, describing Wednesday as the hottest day ever recorded in Barcelona’s modern meteorological history.<\/p>\n

Barcelona, located on Spain’s northeastern Mediterranean coast, typically experiences milder summer temperatures due to the cooling influence of the Mediterranean Sea. However, the ongoing heatwave has overwhelmed the region’s usual climatic moderation, pushing temperatures to unprecedented levels.<\/p>\n

The latest heatwave began on Sunday and has spread across large parts of Spain, with several weather stations registering temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius during the week. Meteorologists warned that extreme heat conditions are expected to continue until at least Thursday.<\/p>\n

In response to the severe weather, AEMET issued its highest red heat alert for parts of the Catalonia and Valencia regions, indicating a significant risk to public health. An orange alert, the country’s second-highest warning level, remained in effect across extensive areas of central, southern and northeastern Spain, including Barcelona.<\/p>\n

The current spell of extreme temperatures follows another exceptional heatwave that swept across much of Europe in late June. During that period, mainland Spain recorded its highest average daily temperature for June since at least 1950, with the national average reaching 28.17 degrees Celsius, underscoring the growing severity of summer heat across the region.<\/p>\n

Health authorities have also raised concerns over the human impact of the prolonged heat. According to estimates from Spain’s MoMo mortality monitoring system, more than 1,000 deaths may have been associated with heat-related causes during the previous month.<\/p>\n

Climate experts warn that such extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent and severe. Scientists say human-induced climate change is contributing to longer, more intense and more frequent heatwaves, alongside other extreme weather phenomena, posing growing risks to public health, infrastructure and ecosystems across Europe and other regions of the world.<\/p>\n
