In a post on Truth Social, he called the vote “meaningless” and said it came at a sensitive moment during what he described as his final negotiations to end the war with Iran. He accused lawmakers of acting in an “unpatriotic” manner and interfering with ongoing diplomatic efforts, claiming they were aware of the status of negotiations.

The vote is largely symbolic at this stage because it still requires approval from the US Senate and faces legal uncertainty over whether such war powers resolutions would be constitutional even if passed. However, it reflects growing discomfort among some Republicans over Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict and marks a rare bipartisan effort in Congress to limit presidential war powers. Earlier similar resolutions had failed in the House, although by narrower margins, and Republican leadership had previously delayed a vote when it appeared likely to pass.

In Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned against internal division, saying Iran’s enemies—after what he described as defeat on the battlefield—are now trying to weaken the country through psychological pressure and by creating mistrust and division among the public and officials. His message, read during ceremonies marking the anniversary of Ruhollah Khomeini’s death and a major Shiite holiday, called for national unity and said actions that create fear, doubt, or frustration only help Iran’s enemies. He also accused the United States of leading an “oppressive system” that cannot accept an independent Iran and described Israel as part of that system, claiming a “hybrid war” is being waged against Iran through propaganda, psychological pressure, and attempts to destabilize society.

Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that the era of “cost-free threats” against Iran has ended, reiterating that Iran has shown it will respond decisively to any aggression. He said any attack on Iran would be met with a strong and proportionate response, reinforcing Tehran’s stance of deterrence amid rising regional tensions.

Meanwhile, Lebanon and Israel have reportedly agreed, under US mediation, to renew their fragile ceasefire framework and establish “pilot zones” where the Lebanese Armed Forces would take exclusive control, excluding all non-state armed groups. The plan includes conditions such as a full halt to Hezbollah fire and withdrawal from areas south of the Litani River, and aims to gradually build toward a broader security agreement. The two sides are expected to resume talks in late June to continue negotiating a long-term arrangement, while also reaffirming commitments to avoid hostile intent and prevent the re-emergence of armed groups.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the negotiations as difficult and warned they may represent a “last opportunity” for stability. He said implementation could begin quickly once all parties finalize guarantees and approvals, and stressed the importance of international support, including from France, to strengthen the ceasefire and ensure Israeli withdrawal.

Despite diplomatic efforts, fighting has continued in Lebanon, with Israeli strikes reported in multiple areas including the Bekaa Valley and southern villages, killing and injuring civilians. Drone activity over Beirut was also reported. In one incident, a Hezbollah drone reportedly struck a vehicle belonging to Israel’s Northern Command chief, Major General Rafi Milo, shortly after he exited it, though no casualties occurred.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz described the ceasefire arrangement as a major achievement and said Israel had delivered security for its northern communities. However, he also warned that Israel retains the ability to strike Beirut if Hezbollah attacks, and said Israeli forces would continue operations in southern Lebanon while dismantling militant infrastructure. He added that Israel would respond to any aggression with decisive action.

Former Israeli military chief and politician Benny Gantz said the US-backed agreement could represent a significant diplomatic breakthrough, but stressed that its success would depend on real-world enforcement and conditions on the ground.

Overall, the situation reflects rising political tension in Washington over war powers, strong rhetorical escalation from Iran’s leadership, and continuing instability in Lebanon despite ongoing ceasefire negotiations and international mediation efforts.

Trump slams ‘unpatriotic’ US House vote to end Iran war Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warns against divisions after ‘enemy’s defeat on battlefield’ US President Donald Trump strongly criticized the US House of Representatives after it voted on Wednesday to limit his ability to continue military actions against Iran.
