Speaking ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, she stated that the bloc must act against “a country that is very clearly violating human rights.” McEntee suggested that the EU should suspend its association agreement with Israel, or at the very least halt its trade-related provisions.

She revealed that Ireland, together with Spain and Slovenia, had formally written to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. In their letter, they requested a review—and possible suspension—of the EU-Israel agreement due to recent developments in the Middle East.

McEntee emphasized that the EU must uphold its core values, stressing that partner countries are expected to respect international law and human rights standards. She specifically criticized a recent Israeli proposal concerning the death penalty, arguing that it disproportionately targets Palestinians and is “completely unacceptable.”

She also pointed to a noticeable shift among EU leaders, saying there is growing dissatisfaction and frustration with Israel’s actions. According to McEntee, the situation in the occupied West Bank has significantly deteriorated, highlighting the approval of 34 new settlements and a sharp increase in violence. She described the escalation as “unprecedented and unacceptable,” urging a unified EU response to ensure meaningful impact.

Meanwhile, Spain echoed similar concerns. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares warned that the EU risks losing credibility if it fails to act decisively. He also called for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, citing alleged violations of international law.

Albares recalled that in May 2025, the EU agreed to review the agreement. A month later, the European Commission reported “indications” that Israel might be breaching its human rights obligations, but no concrete measures were taken. Since then, Albares said, the situation has worsened significantly.

He raised concerns about ongoing violence in Lebanon, including what he described as indiscriminate bombing of civilians and forced displacement orders. He also mentioned attacks on UN peacekeepers, including the detention of a Spanish soldier serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.

In addition, Albares highlighted increasing violence by settlers in the West Bank and criticized what he called discriminatory laws, including the proposed use of the death penalty exclusively against Palestinians. Regarding Gaza, he said there have been repeated violations of the ceasefire, with uncertainty surrounding progress toward a second phase of peace efforts.

Belgium also voiced strong criticism. Foreign Minister Maxime Prévost described Israel’s actions as “totally unacceptable” and called for stronger EU measures, including sanctions.

Speaking at the European Convention Centre in Luxembourg, he said Israel’s response in the region has been “disproportionate and indiscriminate.” He questioned whether the EU’s current approach—maintaining a neutral or “equidistant” stance between conflicting parties—remains effective, suggesting that firmer actions may now be necessary.

Prévost also stressed that other global crises should not be overlooked. He reaffirmed support for Ukraine, announcing an additional €100 million in funding, and urged continued attention to developments in Belarus. He further highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Sudan as one of the most severe ongoing emergencies.

Referring to the Middle East, he described the situation as deeply concerning, recalling a recent visit to Beirut where he witnessed the humanitarian impact firsthand. He expressed support for renewed dialogue between Israel and Lebanon and noted recent steps toward direct engagement.

On the issue of Palestine, Prévost said Belgium supports a partial suspension of the EU-Israel agreement, citing continued settlement expansion and rising violence as inconsistent with EU values.

In a broader international context, political pressure is also mounting beyond the EU. Calls have emerged for legal accountability for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Hungary’s incoming leadership and Turkey have both supported calls for his arrest under a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Turkey has additionally prepared legal proceedings against 35 individuals, including Netanyahu, in connection with an armed intervention against the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian aid mission to Gaza last year.

Overall, the issue is creating increasing divisions and urgency within the EU, with several member states pushing for stronger action while the bloc debates how far it should go in responding to the evolving situation in the Middle East.

EU Ministers Push for Action Against Israel Over Alleged Human Rights Violations European foreign ministers have intensified pressure on Israel, with several countries urging the European Union to take concrete action over what they describe as serious human rights concerns and violations of international law.
