Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime Minister, Unveils Sweeping Reform Agenda on Economy, Housing and Public Services
LONDON: Britain’s new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has pledged sweeping reforms to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, improve public services, expand housing, overhaul education and reshape the country’s economy, declaring that his government will lead the UK toward a “new political and economic model.”
Burnham formally took office after succeeding Keir Starmer, who resigned as prime minister just two years after leading the Labour Party to a decisive parliamentary majority. Burnham is the seventh British prime minister in the past decade.
The new Labour leader was elected unopposed on Friday. Before stepping down, Starmer delivered a brief farewell address and submitted his resignation to King Charles III. The monarch subsequently invited Burnham to form a government, an invitation he accepted before officially assuming office.
Burnham received a warm welcome from ministers and Downing Street staff upon his arrival at No. 10 Downing Street. In his first address to the nation, he described his appointment as more than a change of government, calling it “a moment of renewed purpose and a fresh start for Britain.”
He said the country must restore its political and economic stability and insisted that politicians must deliver better results for the public.
“People have lost confidence in politics,” Burnham said. “The time has come for politics to move beyond blame and focus on solving the real problems facing the country.”
The prime minister announced plans to devolve more powers from Westminster to local authorities, arguing that communities across the UK should play a greater role in shaping decisions that affect their future.
Burnham also outlined plans for a new economic model aimed at strengthening Britain’s industrial base, bringing key essential services back under greater public control and launching a new era of industrial growth.
He said his government would present a comprehensive 10-year national strategy later this year, setting out long-term priorities for economic development, infrastructure, education and public services.
Addressing the cost-of-living crisis, Burnham pledged immediate measures to ease financial pressure on households, adding that details on how the reforms would be funded would be announced in the near future.
The new prime minister also promised major reforms to the education system to equip more young people with the skills needed for employment. He said his government would increase support for mental health services and other key social sectors.
To address Britain’s housing shortage, Burnham announced plans to build more council homes, saying the move would help tackle the housing crisis while reducing long-term welfare spending.
He also said one of his government’s first directives would focus on reducing homelessness through targeted policies and increased support for vulnerable people.
Concluding his speech, Burnham pledged to dedicate his full efforts to serving the British people and restoring hope, unity and trust across the country.
Following the address, Burnham entered 10 Downing Street with his wife, Marie France, where he met members of the prime ministerial staff. His first major task as prime minister will be the formation of a new Cabinet.
