South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams dies at 25, Police investigate circumstances
CAPE TOW: South African international footballer Jayden Adams, who represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has died at the age of 25, prompting an outpouring of grief across the nation’s sporting community. Authorities said the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed Adams’ death in a statement on Saturday, describing the midfielder as one of the country’s most promising football talents.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said. “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents.”
The minister did not disclose the cause of death.
South African police said officers launched an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. While officials did not immediately identify the deceased, a police spokesperson told AFP that “the circumstances around this incident are under investigation.”
No further details have been released, and authorities have not indicated whether foul play is suspected.
Adams was regarded as one of South Africa’s rising stars and played a key role in the national team’s recent international campaigns. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he appeared in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches, helping the team reach the Round of 32 for the first time in the country’s history. He did not feature in South Africa’s knockout-stage loss to Canada.
The midfielder also represented South Africa at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where the national team secured a third-place finish, its best performance in the tournament in more than two decades.
Known for his composure on the ball, energetic midfield play and tactical awareness, Adams had established himself as one of the country’s brightest prospects and was widely expected to play a central role in the future of South African football.
Tributes from teammates, football officials and supporters began pouring in on social media following news of his death, with many remembering him for his dedication, professionalism and contributions to the national team.
The South African Football Association has not yet announced details regarding memorial arrangements or plans to honor the late midfielder.
