Pakistan secures early repatriation of 54 nationals detained in Cambodia
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Embassy in Cambodia has successfully engaged with Cambodian authorities to secure the early repatriation of 54 Pakistani nationals detained in Siem Reap Province. The development comes as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at safeguarding the welfare of Pakistani citizens abroad.
According to Foreign Affairs , the embassy’s actions were carried out in line with directives issued by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who instructed officials to take all possible measures to support members of the Pakistani community overseas.
The detained individuals were arrested during a raid conducted by Cambodian authorities on a compound allegedly involved in online scamming activities. Following diplomatic intervention, Cambodian officials agreed to facilitate the group’s early return to Pakistan.
Embassy representatives have been actively working on the ground to ensure the well-being of the detainees. Arrangements are currently underway to organize their departure, and the individuals are expected to return home once flight logistics are finalized.
In a significant gesture of goodwill, Cambodian authorities have decided not to initiate legal proceedings against the detainees under the country’s newly enacted law targeting online scams. The legislation, which came into force on April 7, 2026, carries strict penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and substantial fines for those found guilty.
The development has been welcomed as a positive outcome of diplomatic coordination between Pakistan and Cambodia, highlighting the importance of timely intervention in protecting citizens abroad.
