Trump Warns of ‘Brutal’ New Tariffs, UK and EU Left Reeling
President Donald Trump has sharply escalated his trade rhetoric, declaring he can deploy tariffs in a “much more powerful and obnoxious way” following a recent court ruling.
In a fiery post on Truth Social, Trump lashed out at the Supreme Court of the United States after it ruled against his sweeping global tariff measures last Friday. He branded the justices “incompetent” and, in a pointed show of protest, wrote “supreme court” in lower-case letters, saying it reflected his “complete lack of respect.”
Despite criticizing the decision as “ridiculous, dumb, and very internationally divisive,” Trump argued that the ruling had paradoxically expanded his presidential authority.
“The Supreme Court accidentally and unwittingly gave me far more powers and strength than I had prior,” he wrote, claiming the decision opens the door to broader trade action.
Trump specifically pointed to the use of licensing powers against foreign nations, suggesting he could take tougher measures against countries he says have been “ripping the U.S. off for decades.” While the ruling blocks the imposition of certain license fees, Trump questioned why the U.S. should be restricted when “all licenses charge fees.”
He further asserted that the court had upheld other existing tariffs, which he said could now be enforced with greater legal certainty — and potentially with increased intensity.
In closing, Trump accused the court of serving “the wrong people,” saying the justices “should be ashamed of themselves,” though he notably exempted what he called the “Great Three.”
The remarks signal a renewed escalation in Trump’s trade agenda, with the possibility of more aggressive tariff actions ahead.
