Russian Forces claim capture of two villages in Eastern and Southeastern Ukraine

MOSCOW: Russia’s Defence Ministry announced on Friday that its forces have taken control of two villages in Ukraine, marking fresh territorial gains amid ongoing fighting in the eastern and southeastern parts of the country.

According to the ministry, Russian troops captured the village of Zakitne, located in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, an area that has seen intense and prolonged combat since the early stages of the war. Donetsk remains one of the main focal points of military operations, with both sides vying for control of strategically important settlements.

Advance Reported in Southeastern Ukraine

In a separate development, the Defence Ministry said Russian forces also took control of Olenokostiantynivka, a village situated in the Zaporizhzhia region in southeastern Ukraine. The Zaporizhzhia region is another critical frontline area, where clashes have continued as Russian and Ukrainian forces attempt to strengthen their positions.

No Immediate Ukrainian Confirmation

There was no immediate confirmation or comment from Ukrainian officials regarding the reported capture of the two villages. In previous instances, Kyiv has often disputed Russian claims or described such announcements as part of ongoing fighting rather than a clear change in control.

Conflict Continues Along Multiple Fronts

The reported advances come as the conflict continues along multiple fronts, with both sides regularly issuing statements about battlefield developments. Independent verification of territorial changes remains difficult due to restricted access to active combat zones.

The war, now in its third year, continues to cause widespread destruction and displacement, with no immediate sign of a negotiated settlement.
