Pakistan calls for international attention on BABRI Masjid anniversary
Islamabad highlights concern over religious heritage and minority rights
ISLAMABAD: On the anniversary of the Babri Masjid’s demolition, Pakistan reiterated its deep concern over the 6 December 1992 incident, describing it as a painful chapter that remains embedded in collective memory. The historic mosque in Ayodhya was torn down under circumstances that Pakistan says continue to raise questions about intolerance and religious discrimination.
Call for Protection of Sacred Sites
Pakistan underscored that safeguarding religious heritage and sacred sites is a shared global responsibility. It stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and justice in addressing actions that undermine Muslim religious symbols or historical legacy.
FO Officials stated that any desecration of places of worship violates the principles of religious equality and weakens the environment of mutual respect and security essential for all communities.
Concerns over Indian Muslim Marginalization
Pakistan expressed concern over what it describes as a persistent sense of marginalization among Indian Muslims following the demolition. The statement criticised Hindu nationalist groups, accusing them of acting with state support and pushing for further polarization and segregation of religious minorities.
Reaffirmation of Commitment to Minority Rights
Reiterating its own stance, Pakistan highlighted its commitment to protecting minority rights and ensuring religious freedoms within its borders, in accordance with national laws and international obligations.
Appeal to the International Community
Pakistan urged global institutions, including the United Nations, to recognise the importance of safeguarding Muslim religious heritage and to work towards preventing similar incidents in the future.
As the nation reflects on the Babri Masjid’s destruction, Pakistan expressed solidarity with Muslims who continue to feel the emotional weight of the event. It called the occasion a reminder of the universal values of dignity, justice, and respect for sacred sites.
Message to India
The statement concluded with a call for the Indian government to promote tolerance, inclusivity, and equal citizenship for all religious and cultural communities.
