Pakistan agreed to ceasefire in the interest of regional peace: PM Shehbaz
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres held a telephonic conversation today to discuss the situation in South Asia. This was the third such call between the two leaders in the past two weeks.
The Prime Minister praised the leadership and diplomatic efforts of the Secretary-General in reducing tensions in South Asia. He emphasized that the Secretary-General’s diplomatic efforts and communications reflect his commitment to upholding the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter and his dedication to peace in the region.
Prime Minister Sharif stated that Pakistan has agreed to a ceasefire in the larger interest of regional peace. He reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs, while promoting peace in South Asia.
The Prime Minister condemned India’s false allegations of terrorism and aggression, calling them a dangerous precedent, and urged the international community to take appropriate notice. He also expressed concern over India’s continuous provocative statements, which pose a threat to regional peace. He stressed that a just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in line with UN Security Council resolutions, is essential for ensuring lasting peace in South Asia, and urged the Secretary-General to play a role in facilitating a fair resolution.
The Secretary-General welcomed the ceasefire agreement and expressed condolences over the loss of civilian lives. He reaffirmed his commitment to engaging with both parties to advance regional peace and stability, emphasizing that working for international peace is a duty that the world needs.
