Zardari, Shehbaz review security situation, approve Govt-PPP talks with PTI
Joint government-PPP delegation to meet PTI leadership to discuss prevailing political situation
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday reviewed the country’s overall political and security situation, with particular concern over the deteriorating security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The meeting was held at the President House, where the two leaders discussed security challenges facing the country and stressed the need to strengthen the national resolve against terrorism.
According to a statement issued by the President House, the president and prime minister emphasised effective coordination among all relevant institutions to maintain peace and stability and address emerging security threats.
The meeting also focused on the prevailing political situation and the need for dialogue among political stakeholders.
It was decided that a joint delegation comprising representatives of the federal government and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would meet the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership on Thursday to discuss the political situation.
The government delegation will include Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah and Amir Muqam.
The PPP delegation will comprise Senator Sherry Rehman, Syed Naveed Qamar and Ejaz Jakhrani.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, Prime Minister’s Adviser Dr Tauqir Shah, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and Provincial Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah also attended the meeting.
The development comes as the government and opposition parties continue to face political and security challenges, with the leadership emphasising the importance of coordination and dialogue alongside efforts to counter terrorism.
