Islamabad stresses open diplomatic channels with Washington and Tehran

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is continuing its efforts to facilitate dialogue between Iran and the United States, with its latest contact with the US leadership taking place earlier this week, the Foreign Office spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said Islamabad remained engaged with both sides as part of its diplomatic efforts to help ease tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Responding to questions about Pakistan’s diplomatic contacts with Afghanistan following recent airstrikes, the spokesperson said communication between the two countries was continuing at various levels.

“Contacts between the two countries are continuing,” the spokesperson said, stressing that diplomatic channels remained open.

The Foreign Office also clarified earlier remarks attributed to the spokesperson regarding US sanctions on Iran, saying the comments had been reported out of context and required clarification.

The spokesperson said Pakistan, as a responsible member of the international community, complies with applicable sanctions regimes.

“Pakistan complies, and will continue to comply, with sanctions in accordance with international and domestic law,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to the multilateral system and a rules-based international order based on international law.

“Pakistan remains in continuous and constructive engagement with all relevant stakeholders,” the spokesperson added.

On Pakistan-US relations, the spokesperson said Islamabad attached considerable importance to its longstanding and multifaceted strategic partnership with Washington.

“Pakistan remains committed to further strengthening its longstanding diplomatic, economic and security ties with Washington,” the spokesperson said.

Pakistan has repeatedly said it supports diplomatic engagement to resolve international disputes and remains committed to maintaining dialogue with all relevant parties.
