KKATMANDU: A BUS IN Nepal skidded off a mountain road and plunged into an icy river on Monday, killing at least 19 people, according to police source

A bus in Nepal plunged into an icy river on Monday, claiming at least 19 lives, police said. The vehicle, traveling from the tourist city of Pokhara to the capital, Kathmandu, skidded off a mountain road and fell over 200 meters (655 feet) into the Trishuli River in Dhading district during the early morning hours.

“Out of 44 passengers, 19 have died and 25 are receiving medical treatment,” senior police officer Prakash Dahal told AFP, confirming that one of the deceased was a British national. A Chinese citizen and a New Zealander were among the injured, he added.

Mohan Prasad Neupane, information officer at the district administration office, said the rescue operation concluded by dawn, with the injured now being treated.

This incident echoes a previous tragedy in July 2024, when two buses carrying over 50 people each were swept into the same river following a landslide. Road accidents remain common in Nepal due to poorly maintained vehicles, unsafe roads, and reckless driving.
