Trump Links 2026 Midterms to His Political Survival

WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned Republican lawmakers that failing to secure victory in the 2026 midterm elections could lead to his impeachment by Democrats, underscoring the high political stakes facing his administration.

Speaking at a retreat for House Republican members in Washington, Trump stressed the importance of maintaining GOP control of Congress. He told lawmakers that a loss in the midterms would open the door for Democrats to launch impeachment proceedings against him.

“You gotta win the midterms ’cause, if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just gonna be — I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” Trump said during his remarks. “I’ll get impeached.”

The comments reflect growing concern within Republican ranks about the balance of power in Congress ahead of the November 2026 elections. Voters will decide all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, as well as one-third of the seats in the Senate, contests that will shape the legislative future of Trump’s agenda.

With control of Congress at stake, Trump urged party unity and strong campaign efforts, framing the midterms as a decisive moment not only for Republican policy priorities but also for his political survival. Democrats, who have previously pursued impeachment efforts against Trump during earlier terms, are expected to use oversight and investigative powers aggressively if they regain a majority.

As the midterm campaign season approaches, Trump’s warning highlights how deeply the elections are tied to the broader political battle in Washington and the fate of his presidency.
